<p>I was in the mood for a few good slices of pizza and didn&#8217;t want to travel far so I jumped in the Meister Mobile and headed to Murphy&#8217;s Pub in Swoyersville. Owners Eric and Jen Murphy have duplicated a traditional New York style pizza to perfection. I&#8217;m not surprised since they have a combined 50 years of restaurant experience under their aprons. Before they opened Murphy&#8217;s Pub, Eric was the head chef at Wyoming Valley Country Club and Jen was the wait staff and banquet manager.</p><p>I love pizza and could eat it every day of the week. There is nothing better than taking a good slice of New York style, folding it in half and taking a big bite. In case you didn&#8217;t know, the correct way to eat this kind of pizza is to fold it in half the long ways, hold it by the crust and in the middle and take a bite. Of course along with a slice you need a cold beer to quench your thirst. As I perused the tap handles at Murphy&#8217;s to see what was on tap, my eyes spied Stegmaier Winter Warmer. I have not ever had a winter warmer so I went with it. On a cold winter night what could be better than a Winter Warmer and a hot New York style pizza.</p><p><strong>Sight:</strong> When I got my Steg Winter Warmer I was excited to see its very nice clear amber, almost dark copper color with an off white head of about &#189; inch thick that lasted half way through the glass. This was a good looking beer to say the least. I was pretty pumped up about drinking it so I did not hesitate.</p><p><strong>Aroma:</strong> Before I tasted my winter warmer I just had to take a smell. Winter Warmers usually exude wonderful smells of caramel, nutmeg, raisins and fruits all blended together to make a heavenly aroma. I raised the glass to my nose and inhaled and to my dismay there was very little aroma. This couldn&#8217;t be. I thought that my sense of smell had gone away so I tried another sniff, this time a bit deeper. Again, I just was not getting much. What I did get were subtle hints of caramel, nutmeg and sweet fruits followed by the aroma of rubbing alcohol. Now my anticipation had turned to semi-reluctance. What would this taste like?</p><p><strong>Taste:</strong> With my first sip I tasted a heavy laden alcohol taste followed by back notes of caramel, nutmeg and cherry. For a winter warmer, the flavors were on the lighter side for sure. Other than that, this beer did not live up to the tradition of a winter warmer. Even after I let it warm up a bit the flavors still were lacking.</p><p>Overall, I was disappointed in Stegmaier Winter Warmer. Stegs Pumpkin Ale was so delicious this fall so I thought that they would have a hit with their winter selection. This is not the worst warmer that I have ever had, but it is not anywhere near the best. I keep thinking in my mind that maybe, just maybe I may try it again in the near future. As for Murphy&#8217;s Pub New York style pizza, I know for sure that I will be eating it again and again and again.
