Pennsylvania police sergeant convicted of perjury, assault

<p>HAZLETON &#8212; George Salata, who is accused of<a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/local/637128/man-charged-with-attempted-homicide-stemming-from-january-shooting" target="_blank"> shooting Michael Gontz in the face with a shotgun in January</a>, will answer to attempted homicide charges in county court.</p><p>Salata, 59, was scheduled for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Joseph Zola on Friday. Court documents indicate that Salata&#8217;s charges of attempted criminal homicide of aggravated assault were held for county court.</p><p>Salata is accused of shooting Gontz in the face following a dispute over a woman. Police said a brief standoff between Salata and officers ensued after the alleged shooting, but it ended peacefully.</p><p>Police said had to undergo plastic surgery for &#8220;substantial&#8221; facial injuries. Medical officials also said Gontz may have suffered a brain bleed due, and that he may have hearing loss due to damage to his inner ear.</p><p>Salata is scheduled for a formal arraignment at 10 a.m. on June 1 in the Luzerne County Courthouse.
