<p>Freshmen reigned Wednesday at the District 2 girls tennis championships at Birchwood Tennis and Fitness Club in Clarks Summit.</p><p>Riverside&#8217;s Karissa Ghigiarelli won the D2-2A championship, while Abington Heights&#8217; Bella Peters captured the D2-3A title. Both girls advance to the PIAA state championship tournament on Nov. 2 at the Hershey Racquet Club.</p><p>Ghigiarelli won her title by defeating defending champion Bri Pizzano, of Wyoming Area, 6-0, 6-0. She advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 semifinal victory over Holy Redeemer&#8217;s Camryn Cassetori, a semifinalist last year.</p><p>Pizzano met Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s Nicole Joanlanne in the semifinals, a rematch of last year&#8217;s semifinal. Pizzano won 6-0, 6-1.</p><p>In Class 3A, Peters defeated Hazleton Area&#8217;s Lily Nowak 6-3, 6-0 in the championship match. It marked the third consecutive year Nowak lost in the title contest. Peters defeated Wallenpaupack&#8217;s Phoebe Cykosky, a 2017 semifinalist, 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.</p><p>Nowak advanced to the championship by defeating Williamsport&#8217;s Natalia Diaz 6-3, 6-0.</p><p>The sweep by Lackawanna League players means the Wyoming Valley Conference won&#8217;t be represented at the state championship for the first time since 2015.</p><style>
