The big question mark heading into Lake-Lehman&#8217;s girls soccer season was the offense.After being depleted of much of its scoring power from the last two years, it was the defense, however, that took its licks in the first two games of the year. In opening losses to Wyoming Area and Southern Columbia, Lake-Lehman let in 10 goals.That rebuilding process was short-lived. Since then, the Black Knights won 15 straight, allowed just 12 goals, and hold a goal differential of 122. Lake-Lehman also claimed its third straight Wyoming Valley Conference championship in the process.Now that everything is business as usual for the Black Knights, they can carry on with their next agenda item: a three-peat.Lake-Lehman begins its quest for a third-straight District 2 Class 2A championship as competition begins Thursday. WVC teams will compete in three of the four district tournament brackets.The Black Knights are led by two players &#8211; Emily Smith and Madison Brdaric &#8211; that combined for 47 goals this season. Lake-Lehman has depended on a defensive corp of Kitt Patla, Lauren Chapple, Sarah Salus and Paige Motovidlak to help sophomore keeper Emma Stroud.Here is a quick glance at each of the district brackets:Class 4A Hazleton Area kicks this off by playing for the District 2 championship Thursday against second-seeded Delaware Valley. The winner will take on District 4&#8217;s Williamsport for the subregional championship and a spot in the PIAA tournament.Despite only four wins on the year, the Cougars are enjoying their most productive fall soccer season. The Cougars started sluggish but made the best of a brutal second half schedule with a 3-2 loss to red-hot Coughlin, 2-0 loss to WVC champion Crestwood, and a 5-1 upset of Pittston Area. Kyra Antolick leads the team with six goals.Class 3A Crestwood wants another chance at a district championship. Namely, Melissa Herrera wants another shot at a title in her senior year. Herrera has been nothing short of dominant once again with 33 goals on the year, including two in the de facto championship game. An injury sidelined her in last year&#8217;s district semifinal loss to Abington Heights. Crestwood holds the No. 1 seed in the tournament with a slight advantage over Scranton Prep.No doubt that Dallas is a little let down with the No. 4 seed. The Mountaineers came short of the WVC championship in a 3-1 loss to Crestwood, and Dallas nearly got by Berwick after a scoreless draw to Valley West. The reigning district champions depend on Ali Francis and Emma Sweitzer, both of whom can play multiple roles on the field with higher soccer IQ.In order to face rival Crestwood in the semifinals, Dallas will need to get by No. 5 Coughlin in a tough quarterfinal matchup. The Crusaders have won six straight and capped their regular season with a 3-0 shutout win over Crestwood. Aby Davis scored twice in the win and brings some experience to an otherwise young team.Sixth-seeded Berwick can be the dark horse in this tournament. The Bulldogs are notably young, but have talented players in Kayla Fernandez, Emily Ouimet and Sarina DeFinnis. If Berwick can finish, expect the team to contend with anyone in the tournament. Ten of its 11 wins came by way of a clean sheet.Ninth-seeded Wyoming Valley West already got under way with a 5-1 play-in victory over last year&#8217;s runner-up Abington Heights. Kennadi Josefowicz added a hat trick for her 19th goal in five games.Class 2A Wyoming Area missed out on a chance to play for a WVC championship with a 6-3 drubbing by Holy Redeemer on Oct. 16. The No. 2 Warriors&#8217; Aleah Kranson has playmaking abilities that make her a constant threat on the pitch. Tierney Porfirio is coming off a masterful hat trick performance in Wyoming Area&#8217;s 4-0 win over Holy Redeemer in their rematch two days later.The schedule sets up nicely for a Wyoming Area-Holy Redeemer semifinal matchup. The Royals claimed the No. 3 seed off of the scoring abilities of junior Annie Bagnall. Bagnall scored five goals against second-seeded Wyoming Area last week. Carly Cavanaugh tends the defensive side of the pitch as the Royals hope to give coach Robert Hughes a title in his final year.Wyoming Seminary is on a six-game winning streak (after dropping its first seven). While all of those wins came against GAR, Meyers and Hanover Area, the Blue Knights have scored at least four goals in each of those victories. Emily Matthews has a string of three straight hat tricks, and Annemaaike Reitsma sets the tempo for the seventh-seeded Sem.Meyers backpedaled its way into the playoffs with seven straight losses, finishing just ahead of a GAR team that ended its program with a pair of 2-1 victories. The Mohawks&#8217; Haley Krasnavage has nine goals.<style>
