Misericordia women’s soccer team drops heartbreaker in NCAA quarterfinals

<p>PECKVILLE &#8212; Dallas&#8217; opening drive Sunday night was near flawless.</p><p>Running back Lenny Kelley ran hard. Quarterback Mike Lukasavage connected on four passes, including an 11-yarder to Danny Meuser to complete the 13-play, 80-yard march to the end zone.</p><p>Afterwards &#8230; nothing. And against an opponent like Valley View, that just can&#8217;t happen.</p><p>Valley View answered Dallas&#8217; score with five first-half touchdowns on the way to a 49-14 victory in the District 2 Class 4A championship game.</p><p>Valley View (13-0) will play District 12 champion Imhotep Charter (9-2) next weekend in the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals. Imhotep defeated Cardinal O&#8217;Hara 20-0 on Friday for the D12 crown. Imhotep has played in three consecutive PIAA state championship games.</p><p>Since the PIAA expanded to six classifications for football in 2016, the Lackawana Conference has won 17 of 18 District 2 championships. Wyoming Valley West won the 2017 Class 5A title for the Wyoming Valley Conference&#8217;s only title.</p><p>Dallas (11-2) lost 33-0 to Valley View in Week 8, but looked like a different team to start Sunday&#8217;s game. But after the initial scoring drive, the Mountaineers next three possession resulted in minus-4, minus-2 and minus-27 yards.</p><p>&#8220;We just came out and did what we always do, attack,&#8221; said Valley View senior defensive back Jaden Duplessis, who set up the Cougars&#8217; second score with an interception.</p><p>Valley View quarterback Janaasah Boone was the main weapon. He completed 6 of 6 passes in the first half for 65 yards and three touchdowns. A dual threat, Boone was able to stop what appeared to be a run and then flick the ball to open receivers. Duplessis was on the receiving end of two first-half TD throws.</p><p>&#8220;Janaasah is a great athlete,&#8221; Duplessis said. &#8220;He runs, he throws, he does it all for us.&#8221;</p><p>Simply put, Dallas had no answers for Valley View&#8217;s offense. The defense did a fine job on running back Mason Kordish on his first five carries, limiting him to minus-1 yard. But Kordish came alive in the Cougars&#8217; third scoring drive with runs of 17, 12 and 11 yards before scoring on a 7-yard run.</p><p>&#8220;Then the wave came and we didn&#8217;t respond,&#8221; Dallas coach Rich Mannello said. &#8220;That&#8217;s one heck of a football team. Hats off to them. We wish them well. We&#8217;re not there yet physically. We have a lot more work we have to do in the weightroom. So we&#8217;ll give them a couple weeks off and start moving metal again.&#8221;</p><p>Dallas finally stopped Valley View on the Cougars&#8217; opening drive of the third quarter, but a punt hit off the heel of a Dallas player and Valley View retained possession.</p><p>Six plays later, Boone threw his fourth TD pass for a 42-7 lead at 7:28 of the third quarter. He added a 60-yard TD strike to Duplessis with five seconds left in the third.</p><p>Back in Week 8, Valley View held Dallas to a season-low 46 yards rushing. The rushing statistics were even worse Sunday &#8212; thanks to four sacks of Lukasavage. Dallas finished with 37 yards on 25 carries. Kelley led the ground game with 18 carries for 53 yards. He scored on a 4-yard run with 3:54 left in the game.</p><p><strong>NOTES:</strong> Valley View&#8217;s 13 wins are the second-most in the program&#8217;s history. The 1992 team finished 15-0 and won the PIAA Class 2A state championship. Valley View played its first game in 1969. &#8230; Dallas finished with at least 11 victories for the fifth time in school history. Other Mountaineers teams to win at least 11 games were in 1972 (11), 1992 (11), 1993 (14), 1994 (12) and 1999 (11). &#8230;</p><p>Valley View also won District 2 titles in 2011 (3A) and 2017 (4A). When the Cougars won the Class 2A state championship in 1992, they qualified via the Eastern Conference playoffs. &#8230; Dallas&#8217; district championships came in 1993 (2A), 1994 (2A) and 1999 (3A).
