<p>PLAINS TWP. &#8212; A day ahead of Lent, the paczkis, King cakes, fastnachts and beignets, along with the more traditional doughnuts, pastries, cakes and pies were flying off the shelves at Bakery Delite.</p><p>Yes, it was another typical Fat Tuesday &#8212; English for Mardi Gras and the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent and the last day of &#8220;Carnival.&#8221;</p><p>George Blom has co-owned Bakery Delite on River Street in Plains Township with Annette and Andrew Kosmach for 39 years. He said Fat Tuesday is one of the busiest single-day short holidays they experience.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s today and it&#8217;s over,&#8221; Blom said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not an extended holiday like Christmas or Easter.&#8221;</p><p>Blom said his bakery was busy from the time the doors opened Tuesday. He said he expected to sell more than 6,000 paczkis Tuesday.</p><p><strong>Paczki</strong> (pronounced something like POONCH-key) &#8212; a traditional Polish doughnut, which the Plains bakery has been serving up for 39 years.</p><p><strong>Fastnacht</strong> (German for &#8220;fast night&#8221;) &#8212; a diamond-shaped German version of the fried dough with Pennsylvania Dutch origins.</p><p><strong>King cakes</strong> &#8212; a round confection decorated with purple, green and yellow sugar topped with strands of sweet icing and baked with a &#8220;baby&#8221; inside. Blom said the baby symbolizes luck and prosperity to whomever finds it in his/her slice of cake. That person is also responsible for purchasing next year&#8217;s cake, or for throwing the next Mardi Gras party. In some traditions, the finder of the baby is designated &#8220;king&#8221; or &#8220;queen&#8221; for the evening.</p><p>Blom said bakers began their shift at 9 p.m. Monday to begin the process of making thousands of doughnuts, many of which that are then filled with one of the 20 fillings Bakery Delite offers.</p><p>While popularly called Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday is formally known as Shrove Tuesday from the word shrive, an archaic word relating to penance and absolution. The day&#8217;s nickname comes from the tradition of eating doughnuts and other rich, fatty foods the day before Lent, recalling the era when people tried to rid their cupboards of fats and sugars before the annual period of Christian fasting prior to Easter.</p><p>In some cultures, especially in the British Isles, pancakes are the traditional Shrove Tuesday dish.</p><p>Given that the Episcopal Church traces its roots to the Church of England, it should not be surprising that St. Stephen&#8217;s Episcopal Church in Wilkes-Barre offered a pancake supper on Tuesday, for example, as seen in some of the attached photos.</p><style>
