Angello lifts Penguins to victory in Prospect Challenge

FACTORYVILLE &#8212; The first goal of a spirited defensive battle was such a lightning strike, Bella Jagoe couldn&#8217;t even remember scoring it.But by the time she was done, Lackawanna Trail&#8217;s titanic struggles against Northwest were long forgotten.Jagoe flashed for the first goal Saturday, assisted on the second one and sparked Trail&#8217;s titanic 2-0 victory over Northwest in an early-season clash between the two favorites to fight for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 title.&#8220;It&#8217;s such an adrenaline rush,&#8221; Jagoe said.So much so, she forgot for a moment how she put the ball in the cage.But after more than 40 minutes of scoreless frustration on both sides, Jagoe swept past charging Rangers goalie Cassidy Gray and slid home her icebreaker with 19:51 to play.&#8220;Their goalie stepped far out,&#8221; Jagoe said, after taking a few moments to think back on her shot. &#8220;One thing I noticed was how she kept coming out. If we were able to pass it across (the circle) and shoot it in, the goal was certainly free.&#8221;She didn&#8217;t need the passing part on the first score, but put her theory in motion on the game&#8217;s second score.A little less than four minutes after giving the Lions the upper hand, Jagoe pretty much sealed victory by finding Belle Coleman with a cross-circle pass for a second Trail score.&#8220;She had a super game,&#8221; Lackawanna Trail coach Gary Wilmet said of Jagoe.That helped the Lions shed an albatross and left the WVC Division 2 with a new favorite.Trail failed to beat the Rangers in any of their three league meetings last season, and as a result,wound up losing the Division 2 title to Northwest by a half-game and getting knocked out of the postseason in the District 2 Class A quarterfinals.&#8220;They beat us three times last year,&#8221; said Wilmet, whose Lions finished 10-2-2 in 2018 to Northwest&#8217;s 11-2-1, then suffered a 6-3 beating at the hands of Northwest in the postseason. &#8220;So it&#8217;s quite satisfying to get one in &#8212; and with a shutout like that.&#8221;The Lions defense dominated the action, allowing just one shot in the opening half and two more &#8212; both on penalty corners &#8212; in the game&#8217;s final six minutes. Other than that, the Rangers didn&#8217;t come close to advancing into the circle.&#8220;We were just hesitating today,&#8221; Northwest coach Ashley Lawson said. &#8220;We weren&#8217;t really running to the ball like we should be.&#8221;What&#8217;s more, Rangers star scorers Sydney Franchella, who opened the season with a hat trick Thursday, and Ariana Walker were directed away from the goal mouth consistently.&#8220;We were kind of nervous about this game, because of last year,&#8221; Jagoe said, noting Franchella had three goals against Trail in the District 2 quarterfinals. &#8220;Last year, we tried to isolate her, but she still scored three goals. We made sure to stay aware of her today, be mindful of her scoring shots.&#8221;The victory may change Trail&#8217;s mindset now.The Lions stand at 2-0 and tied for the top spot in Division 2, while the Rangers fell to 1-1.&#8220;We still came in open-minded, trying to win,&#8221; Jagoe said. &#8220;The intensity, it was insane in the second half.&#8221;Lake-Lehman 3, Donegal 0Alana Antonello had a goal and an assist as the Black Knights shut down Donegal.Grace O&#8217;Donnell and Coley Leo also added goals in the win.Lake-Lehman 1, Holy Redeemer 0 (SO)Ava Radel, Coley Leo, Madison Lasinski and Rachel Galasso all scored in a one-on-one shootout to lift the Black Knights, 4-2.
