Welfare reform should focus on children's needs and parents' values &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I just read the piece on welfare reform (Aug. 12), and although I believe
that something had to be done to curb the welfare trap, I feel that the money
could have been put to better useInstead of just giving people money every two
weeks, let them get a job with the help of a state- or government-run day-care
center. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Forcing people off welfare will not cure teenage pregnancy or single
parenthood. These things are a grim part of reality that we must all face and
make the best of. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It's bad enough that children today have little hope for the future due to
violent crime and lack of direction. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I feel that if there were options available, such as medical care and child
care, instead of a monetary handout every few weeks that people would embrace
the options and not fear failure as much. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Those who need day care can also be trained, and in turn help man the
day-care centers to both provide themselves and others with a new beginning
without so much need. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There should be no welfare victims due to a new law. The children are the
ones who will suffer -- if not by the hands of those who feel there should be
no help, then possibly by the hands of those who love them, but are living in
despair. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
